The 5th IMACS Conference on Mathematical Modelling and Computational Methods in Applied Sciences and
Engineering – MODELLING 2014 was held in Roznov pod Radhostem, Czech Republic, June 2–6, 2014 as
continuation of a series of conferences held in Roznov 2009, Pilsen 2005, Pilsen 2001 and Prague 1998.
The conference was held in honour of Professor Owe Axelsson’s 80th birthday and his outstanding contribution to
the development of iterative and computational methods for mathematical modelling. MODELLING 2014 was attended by 110 participants providing 75 lectures including a honorary lecture presented by Owe Axelsson and 14 invited lectures. This special issue of Mathematics and Computers in Simulation contains a selection of papers which were submitted after the conference and are related to presentations given there. The papers cover a large range of problems from analysis of complicated modelling problems to various numerical methods for problem solution. All papers passed through a standard review process of the journal. The conference was organized by the Institute of Geonics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Ostrava, CR and VSB - Technical University of Ostrava in collaboration with International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulations (IMACS) represented at the conference personally by Prof. R. Beauwens
