Článek se pokouší vytvořit komplexní obraz situace slovanských písemných jazyků v 1. polovině 18. století, tedy v období, které těsně předchází vytvoření moderních spisovných jazyků. Na rozdíl od obvyklé praxe se článek snaží o pohled na jazykovou situaci z dobové perspektivy. Výsledkem je s dneškem obtížně porovnatelná pestrost funkčně, konfesně a teritoriálně omezených psaných variet, která se při jejich tradičním zařazení do dějin současných moderních jazyků ztrácí. Článek má dvě části. V první, metodologické, je probírána problematika přístupu ke studiu předmoderních jazyků, druh část představuje podrobný seznam dobových písemných variet s uvedením tehdy pěstovaných žánrů a pokusů o popis těchto variet (dobové slovníky a mluvnice). Jednotlivé variety jsou definovány v rámci státních útvarů, které existovaly k roku 1750.

The main aim of the article is to present a complex image of the diversity, use and functions of written Slavonic idioms in the first half of the 18th century, which is the period that shortly precedes the creation of the modern national languages. This detailed view shows that the number of the written varieties was much larger, and the function structure of the single languages and varieties in each speech community was more complex than now. The article also discusses methodological issues linked to the studies on the pre-national languages and tries to find the common patterns of variety hierarchy in each of the main cultural areas of the Slavonic world.
