The present work encompasses results on NDs and diamond coatings for life sciences, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. First, the interaction of functionalized NDs with human osteoblast cells in vitro will be presented. The influence of NDs on the cell viability was measured by mitochondrial metabolic activity test and counting of cells stained for nuclei. The internalization of ND aggregates into the cells was monitored by the phase contrast live-cell imaging for 3 days. Next, histology and micro-CT results after six and twelve months implantation of diamond coated cortical screws (stainless steel and TiAlV, without and with interlayers) in rabbit’s femur bone will be discussed. The influence of screw material, interlayer composition, and pre-treatment method was evaluated. Finally, the SiO2 and polyvinyl alcohol fiber/diamond composite material as a self-standing functional porous structure with diamond-based active layer for cell cultivation will be also discussed.
