Příspěvek je věnován Josefu Tvrdému a jeho morální filozofii se zvláštním zřetelem k jeho pojetí humanity. Tvrdý byl jedním z prvních profesorů Filozofické fakulty Univerzity Komenského v Bratislavě (1927-1938). Bývá zařazován do třetí etapy českého pozitivismu, ale jeho úsilí o vědeckost mu nebránilo v tom, aby vstoupil do oblasti metafyziky a docenil úlohu filozofie pro vytváření světonázoru moderního člověka. Tvrdý byl ovlivněn Masarykem, zejména jeho Ideály humanitními a jeho koncepcí filosofie českých dějin, kterou s určitými výhradami přijal. Snažil se rozvinout etiku humanity, své dílo Humanita a její problémy sice už nemohl dokončit, ale jeho pojetí je zřejmé i z jiných děl. Ve Filosofii náboženství Tvrdý interpretoval humanitní ideály jako nové náboženství moderního člověka, přičemž předpokládal, že náboženství je “koncentrace hodnot” a etika je jeho nejdůležitější složkou.

The contribution is devoted to Josef Tvrdý and his moral philosophy, with special regard to his concept of humanity. Tvrdý was one of the first professors at Faculty of Arts of Comenius University Bratislava (1927 – 1938). He was included in the third period of Czech positivism, but his efforts to scientific quality did not prevent him from entering the area of metaphysics and appreciating the role of philosophy for creating a worldview of modern man. Tvrdý was influenced by Masaryk, especially by his Ideals of Humanity and his concept of the philosophy of Czech history, which he accepted with some reservations. He tried to develop ethics of humanity, and albeit he could not complete his work Humanity and its problems, his concept is clear from his other works. In Philosophy of Religion. Tvrdý interpreted the ideal of humanity as a new religion for modern man, while supposing that religion is a “concentration of values” and ethics is the most important part of it.
