Příspěvek je analýzou Thákurova spisu Nacionalism, který vyšel v angličtině v roce 1917 a v češtině v roce 1921 s doslovem jeho překladatele Vasila K. Škracha, který Thákurův humanismus srovnává s postojem T. G. Masaryka. V tomto spise Thákur zaměřuje svou kritiku převážně na britský imperialismus: k porozumění jeho chápání národa a nacionalismu je nutný bližší pohled na jeho život a dílo. Příspěvek se zabývá i hnutím bengálské renesance, se kterým byl Thákur spjat, a jeho vztah k českému národnímu obrození v devatenáctém století. V roce osmdesátého výročí úmrtí tohoto bengálského básníka a prvního nositele Nobelovy ceny v Asii se příspěvek zaměřuje na odkaz Thákurova humanismu, který usiluje o překonání nacionálních, náboženských a sociálních rozdílů pomocí morálního a duchovního pokroku.

The contribution analyses Tagore’s book Nationalism, which appeared in English in 1917 and in Czech 1921 with afterword by the translator Vasil K. Škrach, who compared Tagore’s humanism to the approach of T. G. Masaryk. In this work, Tagore’s criticism is directed mostly at British imperialism: to understand his concept of nation and nationalism, a broader view of his life and work is necessary. The contribution deals also with the movement of the Bengal Renaissance to which Tagore was connected, and the Czech National Revival’s relation to the movement in the nineteenth century. In this year of the eightieth anniversary of decease of the Bengali poet and the Asia’s first Nobel Laureate the contribution focuses on the legacy of Tagore’s humanism, which aims to overcome the national, religious and social differences by way of moral and spiritual progress.
