Před 500 lety přišla do Prahy morová epidemie. Jedním z těch, které zkosila, byl Viktorin ze Všehrd, zhruba šedesátiletý vynikající učenec, humanista, právník a překladatel. Kališnický měšťanský syn z Chrudimi studoval na pražské univerzitě, kde posléze sám vyučoval a stal se děkanem. Byl nadšen básnickými, odbornými i náboženskými díly římského i raně křesťanského starověku a stal se učeným znalcem této latinsky psané literatury a zároveň členem humanistických kruhů. Později přešel do úřadu desk zemských, kde započala jeho právní dráha. České zemské právo, svébytná, bohatá a pozoruhodná právní soustava, založená na tradičním laickém nalézání práva šlechtickým soudem a na usneseních sněmu, našla ve Viktorinovi ze Všehrd nejen bystrého pozorovatele a znalce, ale i učence obeznámeného také s právy jinými, schopného zemské právo uchopit a popsat tvůrčím a esteticky působivým způsobem.

A plague epidemic came to Prague 500 years ago. One of its victims was Viktorin ze Všehrd, a remarkable scholar, humanist, lawyer and translator. The burgher son of utraquist religion from Chrudim studied at the University of Prague, where he later became a teacher and a dean. He was enthusiastic about poetry and other works of Roman and early Christian antiquity and became a learned connoisseur of this Latin literature and at the same time a member of humanistic circles. He changed the university teaching for a state office, where his legal career began. The old Czech land law, an independent, rich and remarkable legal system, based on the traditional lay finding of law by aristocratic courts and by parliamentary assembly resolutions, found in Viktorin ze Všehrd not only an expert, but also a scholar familiar with other laws, able to grasp land law and describe it in a creative and aesthetically impressive way.
