Tato kapitola se věnuje Jonasovu zdůvodnění etiky odpovědnosti na základě racionálního uznání hodnot v objektu odpovědnosti – tj v samém bytí, a zvláště v jeho centru, kterým je život, jehož korunou jsou lidské bytosti - jež jsou zároveň jedinými bytostmi obdařenými schopností odpovědnosti. Tzv. „is – ought problem“ je pouze jedním z důsledků odtržení sfér bytí a hodnot, a je založen také na novověkém chápání poznání, které se vytvořilo na základě modelu přírodovědy.

This chapter is focused on Jonas’ justification of his ethics of responsibility by a rational recognition of values in the object of the responsibility – that is, in being itself, and specifically, in its centre – the life, with the human beings as the crown of it and the only beings possessing the faculty of responsibility. The „is – ought problem“ is just one of the results of the separation of the spheres of being and values, and it is also based on the New Times understanding of knowledge modelled by the view of natural science.
