Benefits of a CSTR operated under forced periodic modulation of the gas feed stream and of natural periodic operation of a gas-lift reactor (GLR) are explored in this contribution. In the periodic operation, enhancement of the overall reaction rate occurs. It results from forcing the catalyst to operate under transient conditions. In the optimal periodic operation the catalyst cycle-time-averaged activity is long-term-steady and the reactors productivity is maximal for given input operational conditions. For any input conditions trajectory of the highest possible CSTR productivity can be found. In the case of GLR, position on such a trajectory is given by the actual reactor geometry and the task then is to find the optimal geometry of the target reactor to ensure maximal productivity of this GLR for given input operational conditions. GLR mathematical model was derived and applied to aid this task.
