The unique collection of funerary and sepulchral sculptures represented by heritage properties from the War of 1866 has never been the subject of research and management by an official (legal) heritage institution. One of the reasons for this was the existence of a traditional and influential civic initiative in the form of the Society for the Preservation of War Monuments on the Hradec Králové Battlefield. From its foundation, this association was personally associated with conservation experts, restorers, artists, and historians, as well as with local elites, this enabled it to survive after 1918 and even after 1939. In the early 1950s, the Society was dissolved and disbanded on the basis of Act No. 68/1951 on voluntary organisations and assemblies. The assets were forfeited to the state. This article focuses on the functioning of the Society in the (semi-)illegal regime, on the professional and personal networking of former members within the more or less official structures of legal conservation, and on the strategy of their activities.
