Předmluva podrobně rozebírá jednotlivé fáze politického a etického myšlení Michaela Sandela. Nejprve představuje Sandelovu koncepci komunitarismu v kontextu politické filosofie 20. století, především jeho kritiku nezakotveného jáství a neutrálního postoje k hodnotových základům státu v liberálních teoriích. Poté analyzuje Sandelovu kritiku tržní společnosti s důrazem na to, jak trh v určitých oblastech znehodnocuje daný statek nebo vytlačuje morální normy.

The preface analyzes in detail the phases of Michael Sandel’s political and ethical thinking. First, it presents Sandel’s conception of communitarianism in the context of political philosophy of the 20th century, especially his critique of the unembedded self and neutral attitude in the value foundations of the state in liberal theories. It then analyzes Sandel’s critique of the market society, emphasizing how the market in certain areas devalues goods or displaces moral rules.
