This text reveals the complex pathway to understanding the processes of the – collectively designated – ethnogenesis of the Slavs. At the same time, it points out some errors encountered upon this path. It discusses the suitability of the term “ethnic group” (ethnos) and the ethnonym of “Slavic” or “Slavs” and emphasizes the level of the ethnogenetic processes associated with the individual Slavic groups (gens). Using the episode of the siege of Thessaloniki, it attempts to show one specific model of such a process while finding support in a fortuitous and unique written source. We touch, in relatively great detail, upon the nonlinear development of the material culture that used ceramics of the Prague type in the 6th–7th century, its uniformity, its technological innovations, and its relatively narrow spectrum of possible culturally determinant markers, including discussion of its specific archaeological profile as a culture with a startling lack of graves.
