První významné poznatky o minulosti Prahy a současně první plošně rozsáhlé archeologické výzkumy v historickém jádru Prahy spadají do meziválečného období první republiky. Toto období zůstávalo dosud zcela na okraji odborného zájmu. Přitom právě zde můžeme v mnoha směrech nalézt počátky moderně koncipované historické archeologie, usilující o koncepční výzkum, kooperující v oblasti odborného působení s dalšími historickými i přírodovědnými obory a usilující o dobré hospodaření s archeologickými prameny v dnešním slova smyslu – o preventivní působení a kooperaci se státními a městskými institucemi i o prezentaci archeologických památek široké veřejnosti.

The first important knowledge on the past of Prague and the first large-area archaeological excavations in the historical core of Prague belong to the interwar period of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia. This period has stayed on the edge of the professional interest yet. But right there we can find the origins of the modern conception of the medieval archaeology, that efforted for conceptual research in cooperation with historical and natural scientific branches as well as for good management of archaeological sources in today's sense of the word – for the preventive behavior and the cooperation with government and municipal institutions, and for the presentation of the archaeological heritage to the public.
