Various models of generalized continua can be represented as internal variable models. Among them second gradient elasticity, phase field models, and micromorphic theory are most known. In the paper, a general outlook of internal variable theory is presented. It is based on the thermo-dynamically consistent concept of dual internal variables. It should be noted that the formalism of internal variables can be applied to the description of both for conservative and for dissipative processes. The evolution equations for internal variables are derived as a consequence of the dissipation inequality. This provides the flexibility and constraints of developed models. The advantage of internal variables model is demonstrated by the comparison with the direct numerical solution of pulse propagation in one-dimensional setting.
