The aim of the present work is to explore optimum preparation route of NiMo catalysts for the newly mechanochemically prepared Al2O3 support to achieve high HDS activity. Specifically, the novelty of this report lays in comparison of deposition of two type of NiMo complexes: a nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) NiMo complex formed by dissolution of (NH4)6Mo7O24, Ni(NO3)2, and nitrilotriacetic acid (Ni+Mo/NTA molar ratio of 1) and ii) an Anderson-type heteropolyoxymolybdate (NH4)4Ni(OH)6Mo6O18 (HPO) complex. Conventional sequential impregnation using (NH4)6Mo7O24 (first) and Ni(NO3)2 (second) followed by calcination at each step was studied as the reference method. Prepared catalysts in sulphided form were evaluated by temperature-programed reduction (TPR), nitrogen physisorption, oxygen chemisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. Their activity was determined in the reaction of 1-benzothiophene HDS at 1.6 MPa.
