Breath analysis is becoming an attractive non-invasive aid to
clinical diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring and can provide
more insight into pathology of cystic fibrosis (CF) and related
respiratory infections. Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry,
SIFT-MS [1] allows the analysis of single breath
exhalations on line and also by the off-line analysis of breath
samples collected into bags. SIFT-MS breath analysis has been
directed previously towards identification of volatile biomarkers
    of bacterial infection, including Pseudomonas
aeruginosa that commonly infect the lungs of CF patients.
Thus, hydrogen cyanide, HCN, has been identified as a breath
metabolite compound specific (99%) to P. aeruginosa [2].
