Článek sleduje vývoj zahraničních vztahů čínských říší od založení císařství do počátku 20. století a zaměřuje se na proměny pojetí kulturní či politické nadřazenosti císařského dvora a na neustálé pnutí mezi rétorikou tributárních vztahů a praxí, jež se nedala poutat ideologickými předpisy a vycházela z momentálních potřeb státu a geopolitické situace v regionu

The article sets out to explain the ideological background of the sinocentric world order and the actual practice of the so-called tributary system. At the same time, it stresses the fact that the China-centred ideology never became the normative principle of foreign policy, which was more often than not dictated by the pragmatic interests of the respective imperial regimes
