The marginal segment of the Western Carpathians firmly attached to the European plate is separeted from the southern still eastwardly moving block by the Carpathian Shear Corridor. This corridor remains an active strike-slip shear zone, and therefore the most important earthquake risk-zone in the Slovakian portion of the Western Carpathians. Presented hypothesis is confirmed by preliminary paleomagnetic data, deep seismic sections, magnetotelluric and gravity data.
