The paper examines the history of floodplain forest ecosystems in the Litovel region that represents the historical core of the Olomouc Archdiocese territory. The local landscape was long shaped by intensive human activities into the present form of a traditional cultural landscape with a significant share of historical and natural values. Using an example of the historical development of hardwood floodplain forest at two sites (Vrapac and Bahna near Litovel) we demonstrate that intense management in the past may lead to a species-rich ecosystem with a significant ecological value.
