Change of land use in Europe has been influenced by indirect economic, political, technological and cul-tural drivers. Historically, there were three periods when institutional drivers for land use change, changed substantially in the CE: (i) transition to a centrally controlled political system by the 1950s, (ii) transition from communism to parliamentary democracy in 1989-1990, and (iii) accession of CE countries to the EU (2004, 2007). Regarding future trends, European directives and sectoral policies continue to be guiding sectoral policies of the member states.
