The study deals with the development and survival of subadult stages of the spruce bark beetle at low temperatures in laboratory and in the field. Larvae and pupae slowly developped in the logs kept at winter conditions outdoors as well as at low temperatures of 10, 5 and 0°C in the laboratory. Sub-adult spruce bark beetles can mature over winter and the percentage of surviving individuals was significantly higher then expected, indicating a high potential of so called unfinished generations on damages during following spring swarming. Managemental strategies are briefly discussed.
