Studie poukazuje na současné zanedbání výzkumu raně novověkých exempel. Přehled dobové terminologie a praxe ukazuje, jak byla vnímána exempla v homiletické literatuře 17. a 18. století a do jaké míry mohla kazatele ovlivňovat rétorická pravidla. Lze zachytit rozdíl mezi použitím exempel u kazatelů zastávajících tradiční rétorickou praxi a těmi, již využívali pravidla nové rétoriky. Zatímco první museli přizpůsobit celou strukturu kázání s cílem začlenit
často rozsáhlé vložené příběhy, druzí začleňovali exempla přímo do výkladu různými způsoby, které jsou vysvětleny ve studii. Jako příklad interpretačních možností je ke studii přiložena ukázka použití stejného příběhu u tří kazatelů. Ta ukazuje na různorodou povahu problémů, které se váží k jednotlivým exemplům i k jejich celkovému užití.

This study refers to the current neglect over research into early modern exempla. Studies of period terminology and practice indicate how exempla were perceived in 17th and 18th century homiletic literature and the extent to which preachers might be influenced by their rhetorical rules. It indicates the differences between the use of exempla among preachers upholding traditional rhetorical practice and those employing new rhetoric. While the former had to adapt the entire structure of their preaching in order to incorporate a frequently extensive section of inserted narratives, the latter incorporated exempla directly into expository passages in various ways, explained in the study. As an example of the interpretational possibilities he adds the use of the same narrative by three preachers and points out the varied nature of the issues which the quest for the usage origins of specific exempla might raise.
