This book features essential aspects of the current academic discussion around and within the subjects of area studies. Although still focusing predominantly on the region of Central Asia, it encourages the reader to generally perceive space beyond the limitations of political state borders, providing various other perspectives to differentiate both between geographical regions and between social groups. The authors of the individual contributions invite us to look beyond conventional borders and discover new significances of this term. The chapters show the other kinds of connections and limitations defined by family structures and social relations, religion and business interconnections, political aims or livelihood strategies that restructure the world and let it appear in new contexts.
