While the very existence of a tiny Muslim community within the Czech Republic might be somewhat surprising even to many Czechs, the strong and continuous anti-Islamic sentiments manifested in local public spaces, in general, and discussions on the Internet, in particular, are much more well-known. Such negative perceptions, either cognitive, or more often emotional, even seem to be habitually regarded as a normal and natural result of the very essence of Islam or, more precisely, of an incorrect interpretation of this religion, a religion that is spreading rapidly. The current Czech attitudes and approaches towards Islam, therefore, could easily be labeled as “Islamophobia without Muslims”. The essay discusses the manifestations and paradoxes of anti-Muslim sentiments in the Czech Republic.
