We documented the distribution of cryptogams in representative forest types in managed and unmanaged stands. We found a positive influence of the largest-diameter tree classes (stem diameter>80 cm) on the species richness of all cryptogam taxa, whereas the contribution of dead wood to the fit of a linear mixed effect model was minimal. For statistical analysis, we used linear mixed effect model (LME) with carefully parametrized size-dependent coefficients describing dependence of cryptogams on live or dead wood volumes. Specifically, we developed Almon-like size-dependence components based on B-splines, which allowed us to study the cryptogam species richness in a novel, FDA (functional data analytic) way.
