New monodisperse magnetic poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microspheres were synthesized, coated with poly(ethylene glycol) and thoroughly characterized using several methods, such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), elemental analysis, ATR FT-IR and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The effect of different coatings of the microspheres on the DNA amplification was finally investigated using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The particles with a relatively high density of poly(ethylene glycol) and a low amount of carboxyl groups on the surface appeared suitable for DNA isolation.
