The study was performed to study the hypothesis that the function of the circadian system, which drives the sleep-wake cycle, may differ in patients with bipolar disorder depending on whether they are expecting an episode of mania or depression. The data revealed differences in melatonin and clock gene expression daily profiles in patients in a manic episode comparing to controls and patients in a depressive episode
