The study is confronted with the question to what extent the assessments of archaeology can be used to draw reliable historical conclusions at the time of the migration and in the 5th century. This issue is of special significance when assessing archaeological developements to the north of the Middle Danube, where inhumation burial grounds dated to the 5th and 6th centuries are not uniform, but rather culturally diverse. The first group shows the same features as developed throughout the entire Middle Danube region during the 5th century; the second marked by the predominant Elbian-Germanic handmade pottery and the frequent presence of Merovingian weapons and can be related with Lombards or related ethnic groups.
