The present review compares impact of three different pre-growth treatment processes on the diamond growth by hot filament and microwave plasma CVD: i) ion bombardment of substrate (bias enhanced nucleation in d.c. and a.c. mode), ii) ultrasonic treatment (seeding in suspension of diamond nanopowder and nanoparticles) on flat and geometrically shaped substrates, and iii) spin-coating of polymer composites on delicate substrates. Combining these techniques with standard lithographic processes represents an effective way to directly grow microscopic diamond patterns on arbitrary substrates. Finally, novel trends and perspectives in diamond nucleation and growth are discussed.
