Studie představuje rekonstrukci lexikálního významu staročeského slova „brada“ doloženého ve staročeské veršované legendě Život svaté Kateřiny. Uvádí přehled výkladů zkoumaného slova v historických slovnících i novodobých edicích památky, novou významovou definici opírá o komplexní sémantickou analýzu lexikální jednotky „brada“ a slov téže slovotvorné čeledi a výsledek komparace staročeské a latinské verze legendy. Výsledek je konfrontován se zobrazením denotátu ve vybraných dílech českého středověkého umění.

The article deals with the reconstruction of the lexical meaning of the Old Czech word brada preserved in the Old Czech poem The Life of St. Catherine. It brings an overview of various explanations of this word, proposed by editors and lexicographers from the 19th century up to the present, and shows the reconstruction based on the complete sematic analysis of the Old Czech lexical unit brada and lexemes of the same word-forming group as well as the comparison between the Old Czech and Latin versions of the legend. The result is compared with denoted reality depicted in several representative Czech medieval contemporary works of art.
