Studie demonstruje potenciál epigrafických, literárních a právních pramenů (nápisy na budovách, historické kroniky, topografická díla, biografické slovníky, sbírky fetw) pro rekonstrukci obsahu ustanovujících nadačních dokumentů (nadačních listin) waqfů, které se v kontextu předosmanské Sýrie dochovaly jen ve velice omezeném množtví. Získané informace umožňují lépe pochopit motivy zakladatelů waqfů, jakož i jejich majetkový rozsah či význam pro tehdejší společnost. Pojednány jsou čtyři waqfy, jež byly postupně založeny za vlády Fátimovců, Seldžuků, Zengíovců a Ajjúbovců.

This paper demonstrates the potential of epigraphic, literary, and legal sources (inscriptions on waqf buildings, chronicles, topographical descriptions, biographical dictionaries, compendia of fatwas) to reconstruct the content of foundation deeds of waqfs that were preserved in a very limited number in the context of pre-Ottoman Syria. The information enables us to identify motives of the founders, estimate sizes of the properties endowed and better understand a significance of the waqf for the society. The paper deals with four waqfs that were established successively in Fatimid, Seljuqid, Zengid, and Ayyubid period.
