Content of lipofuscin-like pigments (LFP), an indicator of reactive oxygen species production, in the rat control heart increases during early postnatal period starting from day 4. LFP concentration, however, decreases from day 1 to day 4, increases to day 7 and decreases again to day 15. Selenium supplementation abrogated LFP fluctuations and shifted the value of heart/body weight ratio from postnatal day 4 (in control rats) to day 7
