The charred nutlets found in archaeological findings from ancient Near East (recent Turkey, Syria, Iraque, Iran) were determined as belonging to the species Bolboschoenus glaucus. This freshwater species was probably widely used by ancient people as a food or was used by other ways. This corresponds with former results by G. Hillman as regards nutlet size in archaeobotanical samples, indicating different species from formerly widely conceived Bolboschoenus maritimus.
