The effects of deterioration and spalling of the original material from the surface of structure or stone monuments on its behaviour and on damage processes have been investigated in various studies, mostly in relation to the moisture freezing cycles. This paper presents an analysis of the stresses in the ledge of the historic masonry model due to variations of temperature of the stone / artificial stone systems. It is clearly shown that temperature fluctuation effects can generate significant stresses in the interface layers in contact between stones and artificial stone. The thermal expansion analysis is modelled by a 3-D finite element model. In this paper is also shown complex overview of the problem of different thermal expansion of the repair and original material. The state of stress in particular geometrically different cases is confronted.
