Branching channels that supply fluids into microdevices on the surface of a microchip are assumed to be made by isotropic etching – and therefore of the same depths. To handle larger flow rates they have to be wide and occupy a substantial proportion of the available surface area. Although the branching pattern resembles fractal objects, the constant depth makes the fractal theory inadequate. Evaluation of surface areas occupied by the three basic components of the system – the devices, the sealing strips, and the channels – shows the limit of reasonable area usage is reached at a rather low branching level.
