Blood digestion in the tick gut is based on a multienzyme network comprising acidic peptidases of cysteine and aspartic class. In this work, we provided the detailed biochemical and functional characterization of the cathepsin L named IrCL1 which is involved in the early stage of hemoglobin digestion. Our results suggest that IrCL1 is a promising candidate for development a potential anti-tick vaccine. The article impact was emphasized by the cover page image of the IJP issue.
