Kniha je první monografií, která souhrně a detailně mapuje sochařskou produkci italských mistrů v Čechách a na Moravě v období renesance. Její úvodní část tvoří několik kapitol zabývajících se důvody pomalého pronikání renesančních tendencí v českých zemích té doby a literárními předpoklady pro přijímání renesance ve výtvarné oblasti. Text sleduje příliv italských umělců i kameníků a vzrůstání jejich umělecké i společenské prestiže objednavatelskou aktivitou panovnického dvora, šlechty a měšťanů. Pozornost je věnována také cestovním deníkům jako autentickému svědectví setkání českého vzdělance s renesančním světem. Jsou zde charakterizovány sochařské dílny italských mistrů a sféry jejich činnosti. Druhá, rozsáhlejší část obsahuje podrobná katalogová hesla děl italských sochařů a kameníků.

The book is the first monograph devoted to the works of Italian sculptors active in Bohemia and Moravia during the Renaissance period. Introductory chapters study reasons of slow penetration of Renaissance tendencies in Czech lands and literary anticipations for the accepting of Renaissance in the visual art, the text also researches ways along which Italian artists and stone-masons came to Czech lands and a patronage of king´s court and Czech aristocratic and patrician families, in whose services the Italians were employed. The attention is also paid to travelling books as an authentic testimony of a contact of Czech intellectuals with Renaissance world. There are also characterized the main workshops of Italian sculptors. The second part then forms a detailed catalogue of works by Italian sculptors and stone-masons.
