Three experiments used the word monitoring paradigm to test Czech children’s sensitivity towards morphosyntactic errors in spoken sentences. Children heard short sentences that contained the correct verb form, or an incorrectly inflected verb form. They were asked to press a button when they heard a pre-specified target word, which followed the violating verb form. Children’s monitoring times increased when the target followed an incorrect second-person verb form, but not when it followed an incorrectly used third-or first-person verb form. The results suggest that isolated morphological violations only affect word monitoring when they lead to incorrect phonetic analysis of words, but not otherwise.
