The -breathing- phenomenon of the plate elements of thin-walled steel girders subjected to many times repeated loading, special attention being paid to plate girder webs under the action of (i) predominantly shear and (ii) partial edge loading. The cumulative damage process generated thereby and its effect on the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in the breathing webs, and their influence on the failure mechanism and the fatigue limit state of the whole girder. The impact of this phenomenon on an "erosion" of the post-buckled reserve of strength and the design of thin-walled girders.
