Here we show that androgen deprivation therapy, a widely used treatment for advanced prostate cancer, induces senescence-associated secretory phenotype together with neuroendocrine differentiation in prostate cancer cells. The induction of senescent phenotype was at least in part mediated by down-regulation of Skp2, while neuroendocrine differentiation was under separate control. Induction of senescence may therefore contribute to development of androgen independence in response to androgen deprivation therapy.
