Given the complex character of the cumulative damage process generated in -breathing- webs, the experimental way was chosen for the solution. Two kinds of many times repeated loading were applied in the tests, (i) combined shear and bending, with the effect of shear predominating, (ii) patch loading. In all experiments, the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, generated in the “breathing” webs of the girders, and their impact on the failure mechanism of the whole girders were studied. It was found out that the aforesaid was much influenced by the kind of loading applied, the regime of fatigue cracks in the case of webs under the action of repeated predominant shear being considerably different from that occurring in the case of repeated patch loading. Also the fatigue failure mechanism in each case was different. And, understandably, this difference must also influence the approach to design.
