This paper presents recent research into non-standard techniques that have been developed by the authors to overcome the obstacle of minimum possible intervention into historic structures. The paper shows the results of comparison tests, which also involved a study of the size effect in relation to variations in cross-section heights and to mortars with different grain sizes. Non-standard compression and bending tests are accompanied by shear tests derived from the methodology for shear testing of soils.
