The supraoptic nuclei (SON) of the hypothalamus receive an excitatory input that uses ATP as neurotransmitter. Voltage clamp recordings from neurons in rat hypothalamic slices showed that presynaptic ATP-stimulated P2X2 and P2X4 receptors modulate glutamate and GABA release and control the electrical excitability of SON neurons
