The paper addresses the specific transition of female school graduates into the labour market in the Czech Republic. Drawing on biographical data, I aim to explain the specific development of the value of work in female biographies in the Czech context. The analysis is based on biographic interviews focusing on the labour market entries of women starting professional careers. Women with low education, with secondary education and university graduates participated in the study. Both women with children and childless women were included. Their accounts reveal both the mechanisms and the role of personal agency as well as cultural, institutional and structural conditions which influence careers of young women and their professional and gender self-identity.
