The attachment of antibodies onto poly(HEMA) brushes prepared by surface initiated ATRP provided a successful way to fabricate SPR biosensors capable of in-real time detection Cronobacter at concentrations down to 106 cells mL−1 in milk. Non-specific responses to deposition of non-targeted compounds ruled out other biosensors based on poly(MeOEGMA) and poly(HOEGMA) brushes or SAMs of EG2/COEG and EG6 from detection of Cronobacter at low concentrations even if the lowest detection limit of 104 cells mL−1 in PBS was reached by biosensor based on SAM of EG6. Owing to well-controlled character of ATRP it was possible to minimize the thickness of the polymer brushes films so that the fouling could be still suppressed while the capture of antigens by antibodies immobilized on the brush layer could take place close to the gold SPR surface to provide a stronger optical response.
