The essay deals with the notion of "world" in contemporary narrative theory; it struggles to clarify differences in defining fictional worlds of narrative semantics (that are models of a semiotic system) and storyworlds (mental models of stories) described by cognitivist theory. It also attempts to sketch a typology of narrative worlds.
