The formation of the Baiyun Cave is directly connected with the development of the Naigu shilin. The formation of the karst underground and surface features depends on the regional tectonic deformation on the Cenozoic extension of the studied area. Younger, dramatic lowering of the ground-water level probably caused faster development of the shilin. Modern formation of the shilin at the surface is, beside other factors, influenced by the intensive dissolution of those lowered parts that are covered by soil and vegetation thus generating greater quantities of CO2 and more intensive dissolution of the rock which results in over-saturated water in the cave.
