Článek shrnuje historii Archeologického ústavu v Praze, který v roce 2009 oslavil 90 let své existence. Ústav byl založen v roce 1919 jako Státní archeologický ústav s cílem studia nejstarších dějin a ochrany archeologického dědictví nově vzniklého československého státu. V roce 1953 byl ústav začleněn do nově vzniklé Československé akademie věd a byl pověřen prováděním základního vědeckého výzkumu. Přesto si ústav (s pracovišti v Praze a Brně, která se v roce 1983 stala samostatnými ústavy) udržel některé specifické oblasti archeologické památkové péče, jako správu centrálního archivu a provádění odborného dohledu nad terénním archeologickým výzkumem v zemi.

The article summarizes the history of the Institute of Archaeology in Prague, which celebrated the 90th year of its existence in 2009. The institute was established in 1919 as the State Institute of Archaeology, with the mission of studying the earliest history and protecting the archaeological heritage of the new Czechoslovak state. The institute was incorporated into the new Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1953 and was charged with conducting basic scientific research. Nevertheless, the institute (with branches in Prague and Brno, which became independent institutes in 1983) retained several specific segments of the archaeological heritage management, such as compiling a central archive and performing professional oversight of archaeological field work in the country.
