Fatigue life, cyclic deformation behavior and microstructure of ultrafine-grained (UFG) copper produced by ECAP were tested and observed. Development of surface relief and fracture surfaces was observed. The results show that the UFG Cu has lower ductility and its strain controlled cyclic properties are worse than those of lower strength conventional grained counterparts. All the ECAP specimens display obvious cyclic softening under the applied range. The cyclic softening ratio increases with increasing strain amplitude. The formation of shear bands and grain boundary sliding are the main factors causing fatigue crack nucleation as well as the fatigue failure.
