Publikace pojednává v historické perspektivě o širokém okruhu otázek spojených se vznikem moderních národů, národních hnutí, nacionalismu, etnické identity a s úlohou jazyka při formování soudobé Evropy. Pozornost je zaměřena na etnickou skladbu jednotlivých evropských regionů s patřičným důrazem na opomíjenou oblast evropské části bývalého SSSR. Vedle teritoriální dislokace se kniha zabývá hlavními problémy etnických, jazykových a náboženských skupin (například vztahem ke státní moci) v příslušných státních celcích (kulturní, politická a ekonomická charakteristika). Důraz je položen rovněž na velmi aktuální problematiku novodobé migrace do Evropy (výchozí země, důvody migrace, cíle migrantů, postavení v nových zemích), ale i na migraci v rámci Evropy (např. migrace v rámci Evropské unie). S tím úzce souvisí i terminologické otázky, definice základních pojmů (např. národ, integrace, asimilace atd.) a přehled stěžejních teoretických přístupů ke studiu etnické problematiky.

The publications deals – in the historical perspective – with a broad spectrum of problems connected with the origin of modern nations, national movements, nationalism, ethnic identity and the role of language in the process of making of contemporary Europe. Attention was focused especially on the ethnical composition of European regions with emphasis laid on the mostly neglected territory of the European part of the former Soviet Union. Besides the territorial dislocation the book is dedicated to the main problems of ethnical, linguistic and religious groups (for example, their relationship with the state power) within the specific states (cultural, politic and economic characteristics). Accentuated is also very actual problem of modern migration to Europe and also the migration within Europe. With these questions is also closely connected the problem of terminology, definition of basic terms and the review of principal theoretical approaches to the problem of ethnicity.
