Chitosan (CS) is known to possess distinctive biological activities. Low molecular weight chitosans (LMWC) and chitooligosaccharides (COS) obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of β-1,4-glycosidic bonds of chitosan are soluble at neutral pH and exhibit various types of the potent biological activities, e.g. antimicrobial action, useful for various medical applications and health care. The aim of the report was to investigate in vitro effect of different COS and LMWC on bifidobacterial strains isolated from human colon. Specific growth rate of six member of Bifidobacteria family was measured in the presence COS (<5kDa), LMWC (5-10 kDa), and CS, chitosan succinate (CSS) and chitosan glutamate (CSG) in vitro. The antimicrobial activity assays and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined. The growth of all bifidobacterial strains has slowed since the concentration of 0.025 % of chitosan, its derivatives and LMWC and at the concentration 0.5 % the bacterial growth was completely stopped.
